The Northern lands extend quite a bit from รuรerst, the Northern Plateau is not clearly indicated on most of the maps
Fern and Stark are over 18 years old, probably Stark being closer to 19 this time around. Frieren is over 1,000โฆ we will never know exactly how old!
The northern lands extended from the Granat domains, up to the Northern Plateau, just until they reach actual Empire territory.
This special intro for the Episode is a special one, not featured in the manga. It replicates much of the scenes and atmosphere of the introduction of the first Episode of season 01, like a kind of homage. And also show us this first travel stage from รuรerst, until they reach the cave beyond the marshes.

Those are the road altars dedicated to the goddess, where people offer her fruit and cereals, as a token of gratitude for the harvests probably. The holy emblem of the goddess is at the center, and the moon cycles and sun are pictured around it.
We can spot several of these in Season 01, like on the journey back of the party (EP01) or at EP03 when traveling from the village near where Qual was sealed.

They both plan to pass again the first-class test three years from now, so they would only go with him part of the journey, surely. Their traveling together would be a nice opportunity to train and grow as mages for them: fighting monsters and/or demons along the way.
But some news arrive, of things getting out of hand on the Northern end: as apparently, some demons are starting to act up again, banding and attacking.
So the plan B becomes Aโฆ travel by sea is faster and he needs to fight for his homeland as soon as possible. A nice slow journey with Ehre and Scharf is out of the question now.

Some translations get it wrong, but the manga and other subs talk about โthe Imperial Capitalโs Portโ. We might deduce here that Scharf and Ehre will go with Wirbel up to that point, and disembark there.
Wirbel is apparently going solo to the Far North to fight.

Ehreโs grandfather: Lernen is usually on the Northern Plateau and travels to the capital sometimes, so maybe they will come back with himโฆ or theyโll get a boat back?

Sein was probably around the same age, as noted by Stark. Oh, how we miss that โnew corrupt priestโ donโt we?
Butโฆ Wirbel thought to be “on the full flower of his youth”! Which Stark dismisses as a middle-age “delusion”.

Yes, heโs surely asked Serie for a killing spell to fight them. See S01EP28.
But there are surely warrior demons that might be a BIG problem for mages, even for a skilled underhanded one like Wirbel.
Front-liners also have the ability to soak damage and distract: so mages might have their hands free to do โtheir thingโ and avoid the โfront-linesโ where they are less effective. So if there’s a lack of that kind of warriors, mages would have a hard time fighting demons with more “warrior-like” capabilities.
Pay attention on how Fern & Frieren use Stark this way to fight powerful monsters during the season. It will make more evident why Wirbel thinks someone like our red-haired warrior is SUCH AN INCREDIBLE addition to their northern forces.
In this Episode at timestamp [17:51]When and how did Wirbel first offer Stark to go fight with him to the North?
From the context and past history, we can safely conclude it was on S01EP.22, between the first and second test of the first-class mage exam.
Wirbel โrecruitedโ Stark to defeat a Fresser (lion-boar monster) that was damaging the crops, a commission from the Continental Magic Association.
The gray-haired mage was so dazzled by the fighting skills of Stark, that probably invited him at that pointโฆ
He likely thought it would be awesome to have him on his side to kill demons on the far north. A testament on how incredible a frontliner our red-haired warrior can be: because Wirbel has fought with many warriors already, and still he is impressed!

He really wasnโt convinced before, and nowโฆ he doesnโt look happy to hear Wirbelโs proposal again. And Fern is starting to look anxious just by the thought of parting ways with him too.
