Reeking of tobacco

The label of this "Febreezy" product reads: "Sterilizer - 99.9% odor elimination. The fragrance lasts for 48 hours." While the "Super deodorant spray" on the basket reads: «A fresh scent eliminates odors and removes stubborn smells. For clothing/fabric fresh citrus scent.»

» Apart from the odorizing products, again Sasaki buys two beers and the OKAKI yummy crackers! (He spends almost twice as usual, really these sprays are expensive).

» Our blue-suited guy is often not so confident to talk to Yamada about his issue, and on top of that, she is running a cash line so he doesn't feel like hogging her time.

She certainly knows how to put 2+2 together. Work issue probably, no need to be a genius…

The "almost proven" Tayama method to smell good

a. Brush you teeth vigorously.

b. Spray your clothes gently with a nice anti-odour scent .

Even so, this is NOT a foolproof method. As we learned on EP2. another client noticed the smell on her, and the store manager talked it with Yamada…

Seeing Sasaki so impressed… she feels like he resembles a friendly doggo!

Is Sasaki a doggie-like person?

He might look like it at times —See this image from last ep. and compare it with "Beth the doggie" (later in this guide).

MANGA extravaganza…

How Yamada imagines Sasaki as a kind of "golden retriever" is even more cute (but "sketchy") than on the anime.

Again, teasing him to sniff her shoulder is something she knows he'll reject and blush about. Why do you always have to tease him in such suggestive ways, girl?

Sniff, sniff… Sasaki is not the kind of man that succumbs to this temptations, though. He would be a fine monk or priest probably.

PART II — Puting the advice "at WORK"

The next are ANIME-Only scenes —NOT appearing in the manga.

» Smokers in this company are quite a bunch. Sasaki is not using a smartphone but Suzuki is… something relevant for next episodes.

»The toothbrushing and spraying are on their way.

Suzuki starts to suspect he might have someone recommending him these kind of things, as he thinks Sasaki is not such a smart cookie after all.

There is a LOT you don't know about Tayama, right Sasaki? 🤔

But explaining the situation with Tayama —no first name, only last name, as all the characters in the manga anime— is, well… complex.

WARNING: BIG SPOILER FROM THE MANGA. Will someday Sasaki explain Suzuki he's smoking with a supermarket employee named Tayama? (click to reveal) Until this last chapter, it hasn't happened. Suzuki might suspect something though: because of various clues and situations where Sasaki seems more versed into “young people trends” than expected.

Suzuki always wants to impress his wife Keiko , out of true conjugal love!

PART III - Yamada just knows what's happened hehehehe

Later on at the super, Yamada gets a kick out of letting Sasaki know he has a recognisable “Tayama smell”. Oh, the evil side of this duplicitous "angel"…

But then she gets all flustered on her… ears?

Seeing him so concerned and embarrassed of abusing of Tayama's kindness makes Tayama blush… right at her ears!

PAY ATTENTION: this is a quirk we'll see sometimes on Tayama/Yamada.

PART IV - A suitable gift for Tayama

After a "good" day at work 😮💨 —his boss is not shouting at him, a first in quite some time— Sasaki is happy and grateful so he goes hunting for a suitable gift for Tayama at the nearest mall.

EoFt ? We have no idea if that is a brand parody (maybe) but it is the shopping center's name.

As we'll observe later in the episode, he had a hard time choosing a nice gift at a woman-targeted shop probably.

AFTER SMOKE#7 — this extra story (MANGA ONLY) shows us that Yamada's ears turn red of embarrassment sometimes —much like Sasaki's red face. In fact our "gaffer" asks Suzuki if he should check his blood pressure due to this "symptom".

Look how excited is Sasaki about returning her the favor with his present!

And here is the “Super S” Manager… GOTO!

A woman whose traits and character you'll love as she represents also the role of an outside observer of the weird Tayama-Sasaki-Yamada "romance triangle".

PART V - Second half of the EPISODE (also: the MINI-episode 6 starts here)

GOTO, who is she…?

As a romance "aficionada" she obviously enjoys watching, gossiping & shipping Yamada+Sasaki.

The manager of the SUPER S store, is also known as “Iron woman”.

Sent back from HQ 8 years ago, she ended up being in charge of Super S. She chills out at her breaks reading Shojo manga and smoking an e-cigarette (inside her car sometimes). She has been over 16 years working for the company and we will see her usually taking care of the clients' complaints.

Is she vaping?

Technically speaking, NO. She smokes an e-cigarette ( IQUOS like) that heats a special tobacco pack. It is less "smelly" and the odour sticks less to clothes, hair and such, than tradicional smoking. But retains more of the flavor of the typical cigarette vs vaping liquid shots. Like these too, it does not leave any ashes either.

⚠️ —WARNING : e-smoking it is still considered unhealthy by independent studies and authorities. We strongly recommend avoiding all kind of smoking in real life, even if it's fun to watch fictional characters on this anime do it.

Is she going to call police really?

She has not dialed a number apparently. It might be a deterrent tactic to get this intruder to go away.

Solved: later in the episode she states she was ABOUT to call the police, not that she did…

Who the hell is "Tayama"? (MANGA)

Of course it is the first question that comes to her mind…

Goto has been observing Sasaki time ago, while he smiles ingenously to Yamada at the chekup line No. 2

Again, his expression and demeanour reminds the manager of her parent's dog: Beth (or Bess?). She's a cutie by the way!

Unlike Sasaki, our "Iron Woman" is more than capable to see through the scheme of our mischievous red-haired girl.

ONE plus ONE is… the same and only!

Our good-hearted guy tells her he just wanted to give her a little present today.

Is Sasaki kind of SIMPING for her?

Well, we might say as much. In some manga translations the question is much harsh but realistic. «Are you her SUGAR DADDY…?» 🐽

Although in reality a more correct and accurate Japanese translation should be something like « Is she taking advantage of you? » (like, making Sasaki pay her a kind of "tax" to let him smoke here).

Of course Sasaki strongly denies that possibility!

PART VI - Yamada gets a gift, AND an earful

Yamada tries to deny the truth when questioned by the boss but…

You liar! Your manager has seen and heard the truth, you've been caught red-handed Yamada!

TA x YA, she simply changed a syllable!

Yeah that is so LOW EFFORT from her… but she didn't have much time to think when she first pulled this off.

Don't mess with that " good-natured gaffer "… is that how Goto sees Sasaki?

Awwww that face… is love in the air?

Not really, not yet. But GOTO just needs a small whiff on the atmosphere to start breathing romance of course. 💨💞

The "love-o-meter" is too high on her scale to let this opportinity pass. Yes, we know, she has read too many shojo mangas and might be too eager to see real-life instances of romance.

But as she says, the night shifts are so boring… that this customer+employee shipping is such a a perfect remedy.

Part VII - Next working dayshift.

Sasaki fears the worst possible scenario!

Sasaki imagines the manager shouting at Tayama —as loud as he would expect from his own boss.

GOTO: our favorite addict to romantic manga!!! 💖

She often locks into her car as a quiet space for reading. And gets carried away by the stories in those panels.

WARNING: MILD SPOILER from the Manga. GOTO's past with Yamada… (click to reveal) Back in the past, GOTO took our teen Yamada back home by car, driving her and giving her advice on their way. (Nowadays, Yamada walks alone to work and back: as seen in the old ENDING sequence from the mini-episodes).

A melon farm manga?

She's reading a series entitled « Catch Me at the Melon Farm !» 🍈

The phrase «I didn't think the web of melons would come into play here» might refer to a subplot in which there's a mafia or illegal network, smuggling melons … a hilarious notion —but that's why she states later, that these stories make little sense to her.

EASTER EGG»

Wait, what…? The author of this manga series is Nishizono Hanako ? If so, it is the first time this character is introduced (subtly) on the show. She'll be featured on Manga chapter 30 (Vol4.) and much likely on the first episodes of season 2.

Yamada is so cute when she smiles… but this time, does she do it because she wants something from the "boss"?

Chief Maezawa is again, cited here, but she will not probably appear in person until EP.9. This lively character is in charge of assigning and managing the work shiffts.

Wait: is Yamada taking that extra shift to please GOTO, compensate for her mistake and make her request more acceptable?

Goto was the one that introduced Yamada to cigarettes then?

Yes… the one that taught Yamada to smoke —and how to get rid the foul stench of it— was Goto. She is done with normal cigarettes and now uses her electronic smoking device.

Although there was another smoking person (see EP6 later on, miniEP12) that might have inadvertently made an impression on her eight years ago. 😉

«You didn't bury him behind the store, did you?»

Probably not talking literally, but Yamada is worried her boss might have scared Sasaki away for good.

«Anywhere but the lungs please…»

This hilarious phrase highlights how much Yamada thinks Sasaki would miss a lung — as he might have to stop smoking with Tayama if he only had one of them!

Oh LUCKY DAY

Yamada is ecstatic, his nightly smoking company and "pick-me-up" companion has been green-lighted! 🚦

Oh that fist onto your heart, glasses and deep voice… you should cosplay Hange Zoë from Attack on Titan sometime Goto, hahaha!

« Go fight for that love, Yamada! » is what she seems to be thinking.

MANGA Extra Story:

On the After Smoke #8, after Goto asks our red-haired cashier if something happened recently with Sasaki… Yamada tells her about a daily occurrence from him, involving wearing mismatched socks! 🧦🧦

Part VIII - SMOKE #9 adaptation

All I wanted was to show my appreciation…

» Poor SASAKI, scared by the fact that he has met a senior employee and thus, caused some trouble to Yamada…

» …except you haven't. Rejoice! Your favorite red-haired smoking partner is here, and happy you came… so she just scares you nonetheless as kind of a thrilling greeting (for her).

Potential inconsistency?

Wait, since he affirms he did not know who GOTO was , why he did previously suspect she had the authority to ban Tayama from smoking there? Or did he suspect she was an overseer but maybe not THE one in charge?

A Kawaii “puppy” ashtray

This little portable PIECE with a keyring is going to be a recurrent item both in the manga and the anime.

The mangaka Janushi also loves this item —and ordered a physical replica to be made and sent home. But being a non-smoker, that astray it is rather used for storing candies!

» Tayama gave him the Mist spray not expecting anything in return, but Sasaki was so grateful he wanted to gift her something! Both are enjoying this "friendly exchange”.

» Tayama pictured him going to the store and having a hard time choosing —with his usual long and tormented face when he is unsure of what to do!

» Would you have rather bought the red & yellow ashtray, with a penguin-like shape , or the blue one with the bone and big muzzle?

» Sasaki likely recalls how he reminds her of a "golden retriever", so he might thought she likely prefers the "doggie" version .

«I can never tell if she's being serious or not.»

Serious or teasing… Yamada/Tayama thinks this little trinket is something she wants to cherish.

WARNING: MILD SPOILER for next EPISODES. Something happened to my ashtray… (click to reveal) We will find out how she reacts (and how much she values the portable ashtray) when it gets lost , sometime in a later episode (EP.10 probably)!

The final teasing

Tayama knows he's such an innocent guy… so she tries to make him feel ackward on purpose by getting next to him and enjoy his reaction.

What she did not expect is for him to get a strain in his "long arm" while stretching for the ashtray!

Easter Egg:

At the end of this scene, we hear some dogs howling nearby . One of them might appear on-screen on a later episode —and has his tail shown in the "old" ending!

Supermarket woes

Yamada is again "scanning" (with her eyes also) Sasaki's shopping items. A cold compress means exaclty what you think. Sasaki's middle-aged body is as "slow" recuperating from the strain… as his mind is to get certain things.

The box has written on it: «PASSLON — Slowly! - 50 pieces- Active ingredient impregnated compress"

This last frame of Yamada red with laughter and cracking up, doesn't go unnoticed by the romantic store manager, nor by a puzzled veteran like Ono.

OLD ENDING fun facts »

On the ending credits for the mini-episodes, the "puppy portable ashtray" was featured too in this lovely way… with Yamada's hand pressing against it … another of her usual "cherishing-the-moment" quirks.
