In this Episode at timestamp [0:15]Only Frieren remembers Flamme?

Almost 1,000 years after her demise, fake Flammeโs grimoires still abound. So many, that people like Heiter could question the existence of the Legendary Mage.
Has she become a myth? The question lingers in Frierenโs dream. That idea will reflect on later pensive moments in the series.
Sheโs not the only one that remembers her, though. As we will see in EP.25 and 28, Serie is alive (whether Frierenโs knows for sure or not) and remembers even the smile of the small and innocent Flamme girl she trained โon a whimโ.
WARNING: MILD SPOILER OF SEASON 02 from the MANGA (click to reveal)

As we read in the manga, this grimoire was obtained as reward for a โsubjugation requestโ: a mission to eliminate monsters or demons.
Weโll hear more about this kind of missions on a future episode in Season 2 of the Anime โand will be the title of an episode even!
In this Episode at timestamp [1:07]Fern is always amazed when her master wakes up early!

Stark is not so excited (yet) as he doesnโt understand how rare is that on the elf mage. A massage and a hot breakfast soup is a nice reward for beating her sluggishness today.
OPENING Challenge: Can you how many demons are featured in the Intro of Cour 1?
Solution: at the end of this guide!
In this Episode at timestamp [3:07]Where are we now?

The Eng Pass road leads from the walled city of Waal (we left on last episode) to the entrance to the Northern Lands, in the domains of Count Granatโs territory.
In this Episode at timestamp [3:02]The always “dutiful citizen” Fern

Fern has taken very seriously the task of reminding them to help people in every land and place. She learned from Heiter about his adventures on Himmelโs party and his care for others: now she is following their steps as a โleitmotivโ. See how in EP.15 โSmells Like Troubleโ she scolds Frieren for saying they should leave the village to its fate?
In this Episode at timestamp [4:07]What demons have been causing trouble nearby?
Not only Aura has been active in the region for the last 28 years since Himmel died. Many other demons have decided it is time to act and reclaim their lost glory, fighting more and more to the south.
In this Episode at timestamp [4:29]Mister Stark or Master Stark? How much of an age gap?

โStark-samaโ the expression that she uses to ultra-politely talk to him โฆ is usually translated as โMaster Starkโ in manga and show him certain formal respect as a Warrior. But the dub in different languages goes as โMisterโ, probably because it sounds better in spoken language and it’s more common as a courtesy.
As for how old are them now: our red-haired warrior is probably 17.5 years old. And Fern is probably six months or less younger. No age gap at all!

In this Episode at timestamp [5:27]Why are elves such an exceptional sight these days?

As Frieren says, they lack romantic feelings and reproductive instincts.
But as weโll learn in EP.10, the main problem was that the Demon King and his subordinates brought them to the brink of extinction.
What TRACK of the OST is played during this scene?ยป
Could be the last part of โMore than Mere Talesโ (but we’re not sure about it).
Episode at timestamp [6:37]Who was the last elf that Frieren saw 400 years ago?

It wasnโt Kraft, nor Serie, but someone else. Hey, in EP.18 Frieren states that she lost once to an elf mage. Was it Serie? Maybe they trained together at some point but it does not seem too likely as they seem to rarely have seen each other.
Our personal conspiracy theory: 4 centuries ago she encountered an old great mage elf called M***s, and she battled against her, losing.
In this Episode at timestamp [6:06]Her home destroyed: a devastating memory

This awful scene of her elf village destroyed (and a swing representing the death of elven children) will be vastly featured in EP.10, and still haunts her to this day.
A powerful reason to hate and resent demons โand shoot them at first sight, as weโll see in this very episode.
In this Episode at timestamp [6:30]Was this story of defeating a demon amplified and exaggerated?

Maybe so. This will not be last first time we see Himmel’s feats become a distorted myth. Frierenโs attitude seem to imply that, but it could very well be that she knows that it was (somewhat) true, but despises the grand celebrations that the people of this town are enjoying, regarding them as โdramaticโ or โan excuse for a festivalโ.
And yes: Himmel got a statue here after a fifth try, which is something only Frieren remembers as an irritating experience.
In this Episode at timestamp [9:10]They were not โfairy talesโโฆ

These lovely flower-decorated statues will remember people they werenโt a myth, trueโฆ Our long-lived elf mage wonders if, in 1,000 years, it will be the same.
WARNING: MILD SPOILER OF SEASON 03 from the MANGA (click to reveal)
After all, even if Flamme is still revered in some parts of the continent (like on Empire territory), her real identity is starting to fade away, and even her statues are not very faithful to her true appearance anymore.
2nd part of EP.07 ยป Monsters that Speak & Draht
In this Episode at timestamp [9:09]Where are we now? Notice the “scars of battle” here

The Granat Earldom is an independent territory placed at the beginning of the โNorthern landsโ. Graf (earl or count) is the title that the Granat family have received from old. Probably from the Emperor in the north.
In this aerial sight, we can observe the scars the battles against Aura’s army have left on the terrain nearby the city.
In this Episode at timestamp [6:49]TREASURE HUNT: locate the GRANAT coat of arms and/or necklace

In episodes 7 to 11: try to locate each time you see the Granat crest or necklace.
Meaning โGranateโ in German, the Granat emblem is a red jewel embezzled into an oval necklace, also featured in the Graf’s flags or ยซcoat of armsยป.
How many times you spot it itโs not only a good hunt gameโฆ each time you see someone wearing the necklace, itโll mean he/she’s a member of the Granat family too!!
A whole army in this frame?
We can count as many as 8 guards in this scene, just in one street of the Granat city.
As weโll notice, the alert is maximum: even if they are negotiating โpeaceโ with Auraโs envoyees.
In this Episode at timestamp [9:40]Fern cares once more: warning Frieren from shooting inside town?

Fern knows her master is very careful, but also that her instictive reaction could make her shoot too fast or strongly and hurt innocent civilians as โcollateralโ.
In this Episode at timestamp [9:48]Who are these demons exactly?

This three demons, that call themselves โAuraโs executionersโ are Draht, Linie and Lรผgner โ meaning โWireโ, โLineโ (like in โenemy linesโ) and โLiarโ respectively.
Her โexecutionersโ often mimic the same killing method of โlady Auraโ: decapitating their enemies!
How do you pronounce these โand otherโ German character names in Frieren?ยป
See the video How to pronouce the characters in Frieren Beyond Journey’s End
In this Episode at timestamp [9:58]โฆsome zealous guards indeed.

MANGA vs ANIME: Guards here seize Frieren and do not refrain from using rude words, lessened in the Anime.
In this Episode at timestamp [10:33]How can Lรผgner perceive the bloodlust and hate in Frieren?

An undeclared ability of mages and demons โabout which will learn more in the futureโ is to perceive the intention of their enemies and people around them just as they try to read Mana. They do that by carefully observing their body language, looking closely at their eyes, and even sensing how the mana they emit changes, according to their intent.
Fern does use that ability with Wirbel on EP.22: when he lets Stark go with him and says she feels no ill intention from him at that moment.
In this Episode at timestamp [11:20]Why do Stark and Fern let the guards take Frieren to the dungeon? What happens to her staff?
In all the places theyโve been, they learned from Frieren to respect the authorities and be as peaceful as possible. Himmel and the party of heroes did so, though sometimes they did not talk with enough respect to kings and nobles, which caused some serious problems, by the way.
But: they have to figure out whatโs happening first, anywayโฆ
Also: Frieren’s staff is probably taken into custody along with her. She’ll retrieve it from the dungeon later when she escapes.
In this Episode at timestamp [12:19]What did really happen between Aura and the original party of heroes over 80 years ago, and after that?

In EPs. 9 & 10 we learn from Aura โand via some unique frames hidden in the episodeโ that Himmel and the others did face Auraโs army over 80 years ago. Before she could use the scales of obedience, Himmel swiftly attacked her and injured her seriously. She used her soldier โpuppetsโ to protect her while escaping, but lost almost all her subordinates in the process. She hid, and after the Demon King was gone, probably in the northern lands, waited for Himmel to die (over 50 years) while recovering and training before taking any other measuresโonly increasing her mana which allowed her to control more โundeadโ warriors this time.
28 years ago, she began to travel south and increased her army and forces for the next 18 years, before attacking the key city of Granat. Now itโs been 10 years since she started her war against the Graf, and has taken many of his warrior’s bodies captives as obedient servants, including the Grafโs son.
In this Episode at timestamp [12:37]Why has Aura sent her executioners as โpeace envoysโ?
Of course, she can keep battling for another 10 years, but probably wants to try a more cunning tactic and see if she can expedite the fall of the city by making the Graf lower its defensive barrier against monsters and demons. She likely thinks itโs worth a try, at least, and her “envoys” played the role perfectly โexcept for Draht maybe.
If Frieren wouldn’t have arrived in the process, who knows if it would have worked!
In this Episode at timestamp [13:16]Himmel โweaknessโ is always rescuing kids

Although Himmel has seen and killed demons before, a child demon is something heโs not used to face. As an orphan himself, he has been especially fond of rescuing children from monsters as seen in EP.02 or Ep.22โฆ so itโs against his very guts to do as the grieving mother asks here!
In this Episode at timestamp [13:58]Just human-eaters?
True, as the village chief says, demons can eat other kind of food and flesh to survive. We even see them eating human food like wine and apples at the end of the episode, so they can sustain their blood and life with any nourishment available. But they probably like to predate humans (and their taste) especially (!).
Some of them are pickier like the Einsam (see EP.05) and only eat human flesh, and others really seem to enjoy fooling humans to kill them, especially preying around villages and populated areas.
In this Episode at timestamp [14:26]You will regret that decision, Himmel

Big mistake! Demons, like true sociopaths, do not really feel what the rest of us feel. They only mimic normal behaviors but arenโt capable of the same emotions, or of showing real empathyโฆ and have a logic of their own.
What TRACK of the OST is played during these scenes?ยป
โA Beautiful Worldโ one of our favorites in recent re-listens!! Evan Call is the “drama king” of Anime music.
In this Episode at timestamp [15:17]Don’t provoke our Hero to anger

Also, this intense and emotional scene gives us a glimpse of the true power of the Hero: heโs so swift and capable with his sword, he can take enemies before they realize whatโs happening.
In this Episode at timestamp [15:30]Why does the demon girl state that he felt constantly hated? Does she โhateโ people herself?
Yes, demons can โsenseโ hatred and some other strong feelings around them, but they lack true empathy: so they behave more like predators that protect themselves from harmโฆ So, without understanding the social rules of other creatures, they can act against others, even if they don’t have โill willโ per se, and without realizing it; but they look exactly like they hate people. At the end of the day: it’s just their nature and flawed logic, doing its work.
That explains why Aura talks about Himmel’s death in such a calm way later on in EP.10. She’s not hating him, just stating that he was an obstacle out of the way for her โat the time he passed away.
In this Episode at timestamp [14:49]Heiter and Eisen were there tooโฆ

They are not very much visible during these scenes, especially Eisen, but here we get a glimpse of them โif we carefully observe the crowd!
In this Episode at timestamp [16:33]About demon’s lack of family ties
The word โmumโ is a foreshadowing of what Lรผgner will say in the next scene to the Graf about his “father”. Also, as Flamme clarifies in EP.10, demons form the slightest bonds possible: only to coordinate their fight against humans, elves, etc. But they like solitude and donโt feel the need to unite in clans, families or to raise their young.
In this Episode at timestamp [17:40]Monsters that talk? Or something more than that?
In Frieren’s world, demons descend from ancient monsters that developed primitive talking skills. But they evolved beyond mimicry and apparently they could later learn different languages and read, although not all of them feel like it. They are very intelligent, have developed their magical skills to levels that exceed imagination, and are very observant of the human nature and customs.
For instance, we see Lรผgner browsing a book at the beginning of next episode. Can he read also?
In this Episode at timestamp [17:40]Character traits: Lรผgner is a resentful demon

When Granat makes the envoys wait: Lรผgner will be so annoyed with it, that he will too make the Earl wait in the next episode โas a diplomatic tacticโ! (Payback?)
He will also feel aggravated when Fern attacks him by surprise, and injures her in equal manner, to get even: a very resentful demon indeed that takes “an eye for an eye”.
In this Episode at timestamp [17:50]Why does not Lรผgner recognize Frieren immediately if he has experienced such an awful time against her in the past?
Well, Frieren was backlit by the moon, probably her face was quite dark, and he could only briefly look at her before faking to be dead (to escape being โZoltraakedโ) โas shown at then end of EP.08, likely, that could have been his mean of surviving that encounter. Also, that probably happened at least 3-4 decades ago. Maybe he learned about who Frieren was later, but yeah, an elven mage shooting you and your demon pals should be a sight hard to forget, to be honest.
In this Episode at timestamp [17:41]What do we know about the Graf’s son?

He was an exceptional knight with great sword skills, honored by the Emperor himself at a tournament. The sword he received as reward had a garnet embedded too. Plus, he possessed an iron will, and faced Aura with a real chance to kill her. Unfortunately, he was beheaded (probably by her minions) and seized by her magic in the process: at the beginning of the war around the city, 10 years ago. The state of that sword likely reflects how it was probably used for a while after his death by other “undead warriors” or himself, and recovered from the battlefield โsometime laterโ by the Graf’s forces?
So the Earl is really fed up with demons, understandably so, and wants some revenge, NOW.
By the way, the blurry portraits on the left, might well be paintings of the Graf Granat’s son: one as a child, and the other as the last image he’s got from him.
What TRACK of the OST is played during this scene?ยป
โMagical Defense Trainingโ (a recurring musical theme, used in EP.03 for instance).
In this Episode at timestamp [18:31]Ready to fight!

Linie is geared up to invoke a weapon; and Dhrat has his fingers ready to snap, and cut some heads with his magic wire. But the more experienced and cunning Lรผgner is going to avoid the fight (for now), โdeceiving with those wordsโ that he swings like swords โas he will state in next chapter.
In this Episode at timestamp [20:03]Granat shows great restraint here

The Graf (count) Granat has still enough empathy to feel bad for killing someone that claims to have lost a parent. Demons surely have mothers โbut do they get to meet their fathers, though? Anyway, both abandon them very early in their lives.
In this Episode at timestamp [21:53]A โGuillotineโ is for beheading
If you notice how they fight, the method that the three โexecutionersโ have learned from Aura โthe Guillotineโ is to behead their opponents, aiming at their necks usually. A most dreadful strategy, plausibly intended to have her Lady use them as puppets later!
In this Episode at timestamp [22:26]Young and reckless for sure

Going against Frieren on his own will quickly prove to be an awful and reckless idea for Draht. He canโt also read correctly the mageโs mana, which will only contribute to his swift death.
He underestimates her power, mana and battle experience, big time!
How is Frieren so sure of herself, to boast that sheโs โstronger than Aura the Guillotineโ?
Frieren knows exactly how powerful Aura was โfrom observing her at their last battle over 80 years ago. She might have gotten stronger since then, but itโs undoubtedly not enough time to rival the mana of our long-lived elf.
